SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Tom Lehman took the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and moved closer to becoming the first player to win the Champions Tour season points title two straight years.
Lehman birdied the final hole for an 8-under 62 and a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples on Saturday in the season-ending event. Couples also shot a 62 to join Lehman in the final group, making two eagles in a round that could have been much lower.
"I really like the pairing," Lehman said. "Hopefully, he plays his best, and, hopefully, I play my best and we'll see what happens. ... You got to go out there and make birdies and shoot low again."
Lehman shot the lowest round of his Champions Tour career for the second straight day. At 63-62 and 15 under, he was a stroke off the tour record for consecutive rounds set by Bruce Fleisher at 60-64 and 16 under in the 2002 RJR Championship.
"I played really well the last two days, probably as well as I've played in six months," said Lehman, a two-time winner this year. "I hit the ball very solidly both days. I gave myself a lot of chances for birdie. I've made my share, obviously. I think the big thing though is the saves. I've made a couple of really amazing key saves over the last couple of days."
Couples is playing for the first time since a back injury forced him to withdraw during the first round of the Boeing Classic outside Seattle in late August. Before this week, he hadn't completed a competitive round since winning the Senior British Open in July for his second victory of the year.
"If I can play like this every two months, I think I might finish my career playing four times a year and just say, "The heck with it,'" Couples said, joking.
Lehman was 17 under after three days in perfect conditions on Desert Mountain's Cochise Course. He entered the week second behind Bernhard Langer in the Charles Schwab Cup competition for a $1 million annuity.
Langer, tied for 10th at 6 under after a 70, was a projected 529 points behind Lehman after starting play Thursday with a 211-point lead. The tournament winner will get 880 points, with players receiving a point for every $500 they earn in the $2.5 million event.
Langer eagled the par-5 18th hole to get a little closer to Lehman, who would win the title with a tournament victory no matter where Langer finishes.
"I was certainly not happy with my day today," Langer said. "My mindset has to be aggressive tomorrow. I'll pretty much go at everything."
Jay Haas, five strokes ahead of Lehman at the start of the round after matching the tour-record Friday with a 60, had a 69 to drop two strokes back.
"I just wasn't as sharp," Haas said. "But the birdie at the last hole still gives me a chance tomorrow, and leaves a better taste in my mouth."
Lehman made his best par save on the par-4 16th, holing a bending 35-foot putt from the fringe after popping up a 3-wood drive into a rock outcropping in the middle of the fairway.
"I might have teed it up a hair too high, but I just popped it up and it landed right in the rocks," Lehman said. "I actually got kind of lucky that I could at least chip it out and hit a 9-iron."
His putt broke about 5 feet.
"It was one of those ones, quite frankly, I was just hoping to get close," Lehman said. "It was going to take my licking and keep on ticking with a bogey."
He then holed a 20-footer for birdie on the par-3 17th and got up and down for birdie from the front greenside bunker on the 18.
Couples chipped in for eagle on the par-5 eighth, his low runner veering to the right in the last few feet. He hit a 3-iron from 239 yards to 8 feet on the par-5 15th to set up his second eagle, and got to 16 under with a 20-foot birdie putt on 17.
He also missed five birdie tries inside 12 feet in the middle of the round, and settled for a par on the 18 after hitting his approach into the greenside bunker well left of the flag.
"I did leave a couple out there, but I made a couple of nice 20-footers and, obviously, chipped in on No. 8 for eagle," Couples said.

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Andres Romero shot his second straight 7-under 65 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open.
Romero, the Argentine player who won the PGA Tour's 2008 New Orleans event and the European Tour's 2007 Deutsche Bank tournament, had a double bogey on the par-3 eighth hole, then birdied six of the last 10 holes on the Trump International course. Returning to a center-shafted putter, he has made 16 birdies and an eagle in the first 36 holes.
"I'm just playing well. I started out very, very well," Romero said. "But really what's helped me is going back to my old putter. It's really been great for me. I had used that putter for a long time and then after a while I changed it. And then besides playing the greens well, I'm also striking the ball well. So finally all three things have come together, putting well, hitting my irons well, driving well."
Scott Brown was second after a 63. He holed out from 170 yards for eagle on the par-4 seventh and had eight birdies and a bogey.
"I got off to just a very normal start, birdied both par 5s on the front, was hitting it good and then I holed a shot out on seven from the fairway with a 7-iron," Brown said. "(One the par-3 eighth), I made like a 50-footer for birdie and then hit it to an inch on nine."
Steve LeBrun and 2010 U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein shot 65 to reach 12 under.
"In a good position is where you want to be," LeBrun said. "You want to have a chance. Still two rounds left, but it's nice to be in position to have a chance."
Uihlein is in position to earn a spot next week in the Tampa Bay Championship with a top-10 finish. The former Oklahoma State star has played the European Tour and its developmental circuit since turning pro in December 2011. The youngest son of Acushnet (the parent company of Titleist and FootJoy) CEO Wally Uihlein, he's coming off a fourth-place finish last week at the European Tour's Tshwane Open in South Africa.
Fabian Gomez was 11 under after a 64, and defending champion George McNeill also had a 64 to top the group at 9 under. Patrick Cantlay, the 20-year-old former UCLA player coming off a Web.com Tour victory Sunday in Colombia, was 7 under after a 67.
Romero is being careful not to get ahead of himself.
"I'm just going to try to keep things going, stay calm the way I've been doing," Romero said. "I think that's the most important thing, just stay calm and take it one shot at a time, try not to think about what might happen on the 72nd hole."
Brown played the Web.com Tour the last two weeks, finishing third in Panama and tying for seventh in Colombia. He tied for 30th at Pebble Beach in his only other PGA Tour start.
"I've played really good all year," Brown said. "I haven't been making a lot of putts, but I've been hitting it really good and a lot of the putts haven't been going in, I think good putts. So I knew it was coming. This week, I just putted really well.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and Wu Ashun of China have the clubhouse lead in the Maybank Malaysian Open after the second round was suspended because of darkness on Friday.
Schwartzel and Wu shot 4-under 68s Friday to finish 9 under overall at the European and Asian Tour event.
Some 75 players, half of the remaining field, were unable to complete the round. Scoreboard leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand was 10 under through nine holes.
Schwartzel and Wu had a three-stroke lead on China's Liang Wen-chong (68), England's Lee Slattery (70) and Scotland's Scott Jamieson (72). They were one shot ahead of a group at 5 under, including Rafa Cabrera-Bello, who had a 67.
Aphibarnrat moved into the outright lead on 10 under with a front nine of 33, while world No. 3 Luke Donald, who needed a major improvement on his opening 74 to make the cut, was 2 under through seven to get back to level par for the tournament.
Among other prominent players in the field, Edoardo Molinari is fourth place, at 8 under through five holes of his second round. Anders Hansen is tied for 10th at 5 under through nine holes, while Matteo Manassero is tied for 20th at 4 under through two rounds. Padraig Harrington is also 4 under, but has played only six holes of his second round. Last week’s winner Thomas Aiken is 3 under through 5 holes, while big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros is 2 under through 36 holes.
Cabrera-Bello had a difficult journey to the tournament. His bag and passport were stolen, so he flew from London to Madrid and back again to get a replacement before the 13-hour flight to Kuala Lumpur.
''I was on a train going from my home in Switzerland to the airport and I had my bag stolen, so all my personal stuff – passport, money, credit cards, computer, camera, iPad – was gone,'' Cabrera-Bello said.
On Thursday, thunderstorms caused suspension of the first round with half the field still on the course.
Pre-tournament favorite Schwartzel, who won back-to-back tournaments in December last year by a combined total of 23 shots, already has one eye on a Monday finish, thanks to Friday’s 2 ½-hour delay due to the threat of lightning. And with thunderstorms an almost daily occurrence at this time of year, plans for an early finish on Sunday to allow the country's prime minister to attend the prize-giving ceremony before going on to the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix at nearby Sepang already look in jeopardy.
The second round will resume at 7:45 a.m. local time on Saturday, with the third round beginning not before 1:15 p.m.
Schwartzel, looking to become the seventh South African winner on the European Tour in 2013, was 4 under par after 11 holes of his first round when a thunderstorm forced play to be abandoned for the day on Thursday. He was among 76 players who resumed play this morning at 7:45 a.m. local time and completed an opening 67 in style, chipping in for a birdie on the 18th.
That left him two shots off the clubhouse lead held by Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat, but it did not take him long to wipe out that deficit when the second round got under way.
Starting from the 10th, Schwartzel birdied his first two holes and picked up two more shots on the 17th and 18th to be out in 32, while further birdies followed on the third and fifth. At that stage he enjoyed a three-shot lead and looked capable of another runaway victory, but bogeys at the sixth and seventh meant he had to settle for a 68.
"I suppose I can't be too hard on myself," said Schwartzel, who played 25 holes in the sweltering heat, which contributed to playing partner Chris Wood withdrawing because of illness. "It's really extraordinarily hot out there and it was a bit of lack of concentration on the end. I made a bad decision on six with club selection and then hit a very poor shot on seven (into a greenside bunker).
"It was a long day out there but overall I feel I played pretty well and am at least giving myself a chance. I am playing consistently," he added. "If I was a bit sharper, I could have really separated myself but the game is good and shows me if I keep doing that, hopefully by Sunday, or whenever we finish, I will be on top."

Jim Hostler Headed To Buffalo

The Ravens will need a new wide receivers coach to replace Jim Hostler.

The Ravens need a new wide receivers coach.

Jim Hostler was named a senior offensive assistant by the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, the team announced.

Hostler was one of the finalists for the Ravens’ opening at offensive coordinator before Baltimore hired Gary Kubiak. He was the only in-house candidate interviewed for the position.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said he was still in contact with Hostler and expected something to happen in the next couple of days that worked best for everybody involved.

"Jim is a fine coach and even better person," Harbaugh said. "He has been a big part of the success in Baltimore, and I am grateful for the contributions he made to our team. We wish him well in Buffalo."

Hostler spent the past six years in Baltimore, coming in with Harbaugh in 2008. He was well respected and liked by his Ravens players, and developed receivers such as Torrey Smith and Marlon Brown.

There is media speculation that former Texans Wide Receivers Coach Larry Kirksey could replace Hostler. The Ravens have already hired a couple of Kubiak’s assistants from Houston in Rick Dennison (quarterbacks coach) and Brian Pariani (tight ends coach).

The Ravens now have two offensive openings to fill with wide receivers coach and running backs coach.
